Hazel Pratt-Paige – Hanover Council Candidate

First of all, tell us a little about your background and overall platform in 100 words or less.

I have always been in service to the Town, at church, Meals on Wheels, Parks, Recreation & Culture Advisory, and Off-Leash Ad Hoc Committee. I’m President of the Grey Bruce Labour Council and the Youth Education Chair for Legion Branch 130 organizing programs for area schools. As a recreation assistant in Long-Term Care, I appreciate the history of the area and the hope for our future generations.

Our Town needs good jobs with decent wages and benefits, and support local businesses. I believe in public input, consensus building and approachable and transparent municipal government.

What do you see as the major issue(s) facing business-owners in Grey-Bruce?

The recent economic downturn continues to impact our local economy and businesses. A few issues are transportation of products and finding skilled employees.

What strategies do you have in mind to stimulate economic growth in the region?

I think that there needs to be consultation with business to develop a strategy to stimulate economic growth and to address any other issues, such as above.

Consultation is important to ensure that the present levels work for businesses.

Do you feel economic growth should focus on:

A) Bringing in new business developments, or

B) Encouraging small businesses presently in operations?

I feel there needs to be a blend of both new business development and supporting present businesses. There also requires a partnering with provincial and federal programs to build our economy.

Do you think local business taxes should be:

A) Increased

B) Decreased

C) Maintained at current levels

I feel business taxes should be maintained at current levels if possible. Consultation is important to ensure that the present levels work for businesses.

Should there be any changes in the services offered to local businesses?

Once again, consultation and working together to ensure economic success whether that requires changes in services offered to businesses.
