Blast From the Past Candidate Rob Leonard

Council Candidate Rob Leonard

Rob Leonard – Owen Sound Councillor Candidate

First of all, tell us a little about your background and overall platform in 100 words or less.

I ran for council in 1997 and finished with over 1000 votes which, considering the fact I was pretty much an unknown, wasn’t a bad showing.

I then sat on the Business Bylaw Regulatory Committee which gave me a better idea of the operations of city hall. I have been very active volunteering in the community for the past 17 years with Owen Sound Minor Soccer Executive and fundraising for community efforts through our Amplifi Entertainment.

I would, if elected, embrace and help enhance existing businesses and industry and encourage new ones to locate here with a more business friendly approach. Embrace and help enhance our post-secondary school and their programs in order to attract younger people to the area by offering quality education opportunities. City Hall needs more transparency.

What do you see as the major issue(s) facing business-owners in Grey-Bruce?

I have heard, second hand, of some of the issues facing already established businesses and also those trying to locate a business here. I would like to hear first hand what those issues are and will be asking local businesses once I start my campaign. I plan to visit as many downtown businesses as possible to get a clearer picture. If elected I can then try to have those concerns addressed.

What strategies do you have in mind to stimulate economic growth in the region?

I do have some ideas but feel I need to have more information before discussing them. I want to have all of my information before I make any firm decisions. If elected I will be speaking to all people concerned in order to make the best decision possible.

Do you feel economic growth should focus on:

A) Bringing in new business developments, or

B) Encouraging small businesses presently in operations?

I would say B before A. We need to take care of the businesses presently operating.

Do you think local business taxes are should be:

1. Increased

2. Decreased

3. Maintained at current levels

Of course we would like to say decreased but maintained at current levels would be a win in my books. Another question that will be better answered if I’m elected. Then I can get true answers so I can make an informed decision.

6) Should there be any changes in the services offered to local businesses?

Definitely I would need to speak to the local business community and hear their concerns and what changes in service they feel will help them to operate their business. I would need to get both sides opinions before coming to any conclusions.
