The City of Owen Sound has won a tourism award from the Economic Developers Council of Ontario for its marketing of the Owen Sound Salmon Tour & Tasting event last fall.
The City received an honorable mention in the Technology and New Media category, competing against municipalities with a population of 10,000 to 50,000. The salmon tour campaign used primarily digital media, including videos, Twitter and Facebook, to promote the event, which featured free guided tours of the salmon spawning channels and Georgian Bay salmon prepared by local chefs.
More than 60 per cent of the people who attended were visitors, highlighting the campaign’s success in attracting people from outside the region seeking a unique fall activity.
“This award is an honor for Owen Sound,” said Mayor Ian Boddy, who attended the EDCO awards ceremony in Hamilton on Thursday evening. “It recognizes our success in developing the Salmon Tour – an exciting new fall attraction – and in effectively marketing it using new media.”
The salmon tour and tasting was a partnership between Owen Sound Tourism, the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association, Grey Sauble Conservation and local chefs. This year’s Salmon Celebration will be held over the Thanksgiving weekend, October 10-12, 2015.
