Last year, MoneySense Magazine named Owen Sound the 15th best place to retire in Canada. At the last census, 22.4% of the Owen Sound population was older than 65. Compared with a national average of 14.8%, these unique demographics affect us both socially and economically.

Entrepreneurs in Grey and Bruce Countries are beginning to respond in various ways, between real estate developments and in-home health care services. Local business, Maids Unlimited provides cleaning services to homes and businesses in the Grey and Bruce region, and also home maintenance service which is especially convenient for the elderly.

‘Most senior citizens are challenged by general upkeep, cleaning and shopping and general household maintenance,’ Brenda Vander Ploeg says, ‘Maids Unlimited may be the answer to their troubles.’

Maids Unlimited, a residential and commercial cleaning business operated by Brenda and Wayne Vander Ploeg has recently reached a 25-year milestone. While they are continuing to expand their professional clientele, they also are adapting to meet the growing needs of an aging population.

‘Nothing has really changed over the years,’ says Brenda. ‘Maids Unlimited has always provided our own environmentally, biodegradable, pet friendly cleaning products and our own vacuum cleaner and mops.’

‘They most certainly don’t want to come home to spend the entire weekend or their valued day off cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, checking off chores on the “honey do” list. Maids Unlimited provides them with the freedom they so deservingly enjoy.’Maids Unlimited is a husband and wife team. They are fully bonded and insured to clean entire homes from on a weekly, biweekly, triweekly or monthly basis.

Eleanor Lozon and her family have used Maids Unlimited for over 25 years. She says, ‘They’re very agreeable people. Reliable, honest, and trustworthy. What more could you ask for?’

Brenda is responsible for bookkeeping, as well as the cleaning service. Wayne moves heavy furniture and does interior/exterior painting, carpentry, trim work, all types of flooring installations, eaves trough cleaning, lawn care, dump runs, and more.

‘They’re all round nice people to deal with,’ says Wayne Mc Intee, who also is a customer of over 25 years. ‘I’ve kept them around for all these years, so that says something.’

‘Mature professionals juggle their free time between work, travel, and grandchildren,’ says Brenda. Just like the working professional class, ‘they most certainly don’t want to come home to spend the entire weekend or their valued day off cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, checking off chores on the “honey do” list. Maids Unlimited provides them with the freedom they so deservingly enjoy.’

Through the 25 years Maids Unlimited has operated, Brenda says, ‘I have valued my clients and treat them like family and the payback has been profitable, for the most part.’

As our community continues to age, the economic impact of this group will expand, and more services will develop to address the various needs of an aging population. Ahead of the trend, services like Maids Unlimited have expanded their home cleaning services to accommodate for this our region’s unique demographics. They and others help keep seniors comfortable in their own homes, and Owen Sound continues to be a great place to retire.
